THE HOUSE OF TOMORROW (2017)

Feb. 16, New Paltz United Methodist Church, 1 Grove St., New Paltz

In this debut comedy drama from writer-director Peter Livolsi, 16-year-old Sebastian Prendergast (Asa Butterfield) spends his life with his Nana (Ellen Burstyn) in their geodesic dome home tourist attraction, where she raises him on the futurist teachings of her former mentor, the late Buckminster Fuller, in the hope that Sebastian will eventually carry Bucky's torch and make the world a better place. But when a stroke sidelines Nana, Sebastian begins sneaking around with Jared Whitcomb (Alex Wolff), a chain-smoking, 16-year-old, up-and-coming suburban punk rocker with a heart transplant who lives with his church-involved single father Alan (Nick Offerman) and irascible teenage sister Meredith (Maude Apatow). Unbeknownst to Nana, Sebastian and Jared form a band. Eventually, with Nana's dreams, his first real friendship and a church talent show at stake, Sebastian must decide if he wants to become the next Bucky Fuller, the next Sid Vicious or something else entirely. "A charmer that will incite a smile from ear to ear with each and every scene brimming with hope in the face of downtrodden situations and a world that tells you no." Kyle Kohner. The Playlist. "A sweet, tart and intelligently life-affirming story of teenage friendship and outsider spirit with a supremely light touch, and a winning collection of performances." Robert Abele, The Wrap. Not rated.
